總的說來，漢語定語位置比較固定，處在被修飾語之前；英語定語的位置比較靈活，前置、后置均可。在口譯時應盡量使用前置定語，這樣可順應漢語思維方式，心理壓力較小。但如果在前面漏譯了定語，也不必慌張，通常不需退回重譯，可想方設法在后面補上。如定語很多，口譯時一下子未全部譯出，也可使用分拆的辦法，將定語分成兩組分別處理。在口譯中如一時想不出如何譯某—定語，還可將定語轉換成其它結構。畢竟口譯不必像筆譯那么精確，譯出主要意思即可。

剛剛閉幕的全國人代會通過了修改憲法。

前置定語“剛剛閉幕的”通常譯為后置定語(which has just concluded)?，F使用前置定語The just concluded，雖然新聞體味道較重，但卻符合漢語思維方式。

這也會對下一個世紀的全球和地區的戰略平衡與穩定帶來非常不利的影響。

如能盡量使用前置形容詞結構可使譯文簡化，并符合漢語語序：the next century's global and regional strategic balance and stability。如使用過多的后置結構譯員往往感到很累：the strategic balance and stability in the whole world or in a certain region in the next century。

“中國(的)”可以譯成China’s或(the)Chinese。但在口譯中時間很緊，最好譯成China's，否則還要考慮Chinese之前是否要添加the。

定語的前后安排

例 中國一直奉行獨立自主的和平外交政策。

“政策”前有3個定語“獨立自主”、“和平”、“外交”。因為英語定語的位置較靈活，英譯時不要花太多的時間去思考定語的位置，幾乎可以以任何定語開頭。除了此譯員的譯法，還可譯為 an independent peaceful policy for diplomatic affairs/A foreign policy of independence and peace等。

第二是開放中國的電訊市場，讓外國資本進入中國的電訊市場。

英語的定語位置比較靈活，應充分利用?！爸袊碾娪嵤袌觥笨勺g為China's (the Chinese) telecommunications market。但有時譯員可能開始漏譯了China's，直接譯出了telecommunications market。這時不必退回去重新譯，可在后面補上in China或of China

多定語的分拆 

例 中日雙方共同宣布：把今后的中日關系定位為“中國日本致力于和平與發展的友好合作關系”。

The two sides also announced that they agree to define the future Sino-Japanese relation as a partnership for friendship and cooperation, for peace and development．

“伙伴關系”前面的定語較多，有“和平”、“發展”、“友好”、“合作”4個定語。由于口譯時時間緊迫，要迅速處理四個定語，還要兼顧搭配關系，有一定難度。此譯員先譯出“partnership for friendship and cooperation，剩下兩個定語似乎不太容易連接上去，于是此譯員采用并列結構for peace and development，再補譯上去。當然，這里還有其它譯法。如能譯成前置定語的應及早處理掉，這樣后面的結構就比較簡單了：a friendly and cooperative partnership for peace and development。

定語的轉換

現在世界的潮流是走向和平與發展，走向緩和。

有時譯員會思想不太集中，一下子想不出適當的詞語和結構，這時可使用化繁為簡的辦法。在翻譯“現在世界的(潮流)”時，如一下子想不出如何把兩個前置定語(“現在”與“世界的”)正確地搭配在一起，不妨采用轉換與分解的辦法。此譯員先轉譯成他熟悉的In today's world，由于這是一個相對獨立的詞組，不必再考慮它與trend的搭配關系了。
